Santa Claus and his merry bunch of riders

This is one of the best times of the year to ride a bike around City of Gold. The streets a little bit emptier, the folks full of good tides and the spirit of the season abounds. It’s definitely more ho-ho-ho than yoh-yoh-yoh.

The good people at Critical Mass Sandton will be hosting their Santa Cycle on Sunday, December 16, their last event for the year. All attendees are requested to wear their “best Christmas outfit” as this one “is for the adult Santas only”. While the ride always welcomes kids at the rides, they have suggested that this will be a little bit merrier thanusual and suggest you find a baby sitter for this one.

Three bar stops and much merriment might make for a dangerous time for little ones.

Good advice. But this will be a fun way to end the year and embrace the festive season. The ride will start and end at the Concept Cyclery in Whitely road in Melrose Arch, with riders meeting at 3pm and leaving at 3.30pm sharp.

“There will be a few surprise stops so bring cash for a drink and something to eat. We will blow a whistle when we are ready to depart so we can all depart together. We will still wait another few minutes together outside the venue for everyone to gather their bikes and get together” say the organisers. They urge all participants to familiarise themselves with the safety precautions on the page.

Please DO NOT PASS THE LEAD SOUNDBIKE, we need to try keep the whole group together as a bunch for safety.

For those who feel like a critical ride after Christmas, the Kidical Mass ride will be held in the Randburg suburb ofBerario on December 30. They request that you bring one previously owned toy that your kids or you don’t use any more to donate to charity. The toy should be in working order. The riders’ briefing will be held at the Berario Shopping Centre at 3.55pm and caters for all - Beginners, Push Bikes, Balance Bikes, even Training Wheeled bikes. It takes place around the cones at Berario Shopping Centre Parking lot. A space flat and wide. Watching the other kids push off and pedal inspires the newbies to do the same.

“Confident Riders” can do one or two laps of a 5km set course around the suburb. While they encourage parents to ride or run along they will “accept kids riding sans-parents”.
